How to make handwashing fun for kids

Coronavirus updates with the advice to “wash your hands” during the Covid-19 crisis may seem a bit obvious, but do your kids really remember to do it all the time? After a while, kids will fall numb to constant reminders to wash their hands.

But it’s still the single most important thing they can do to stop the spread of the virus, and they’ll have to keep on doing it regularly for at least the next few months. It's time to make sure your kids really have their handwashing technique down.

The data on handwashing in schools

Schools across the world have taken handwashing seriously during the outbreak of this coronavirus. According to a survey by Teacher Tapp, 56% of primary schools actively taught pupils about handwashing, and 74% provided soap and warm water so that kids could wash their hands. You would think that would be sufficient. Unfortunately, it’s not.

As it turns out, nagging alone isn’t enough to convince kids to wash their hands - and there’s data to prove it. Only 15% of pupils at the schools in the study were reported to have washed their hands upon entering school or at break times. See the numbers for yourself here.

We’ve created some fun resources that take the reminding out of the handwashing equation, and that show kids the right way to wash their hands. Hang our printable posters in every bathroom of the house to make sure kids have their handwashing technique down - and download our activity pack to really make sure it sticks!

How to wash your hands

We won’t tell anyone if you realise that you’ve spent decades doing some really subpar handwashing. Did you know that you should scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, or that soap and water is a better bet than hand gels? Kids are even newer to this!

According to the CDC, simple water and soap is the best way to rid your hands of germs. And the NHS has also given clear advice on handwashing: when to do it, and how. We’ve taken this advice and turned it into a fun activity for kids, with epidemiologists and microbes transformed into friendly characters.
